Matakana Coast

The Matakana Coast is home to a flourishing wine industry. Less than an hour from Auckland, the wineries are perched on hillsides overlooking hills and river valleys. Follow the Matakana Wine Trail from SH1 to visit the cellar doors which focus on silky reds, vibrant whites and ravishing roses.

Whether you want to treat yourself to some retail therapy, visit a few of the many craft people or simply take in the scenery, our region offers a range of activities and accommodation options to suit different needs and price ranges.

The region also has a startling array of fresh produce, often available from roadside stalls. From limes, avocados, herbs, persimmons, chestnuts, olives, venison and oysters, the area's chefs are spoilt for choice.

Matakana is home to a number of nationally and internationally recognized artists. They create a diverse range of fine art and crafts many available from the artists home studios, gallery or workshop.

The Matakana Farmers Market is every Saturday from 8.00am until 1.00pm. The vibrant farmer's market is a focal point for locals and growers to meet. Luscious produce from the area fill the stalls, fruit and vegetables, delicious home baking and Italian-style sausages, divine organic chocolate, fine wines, boutique olive oils, locally-brewed beer, the all-important morning coffee and live music as an accompaniment. Food trails are becoming increasingly popular.
